Welcome to Sunamganj! Nestled in the heart of the Sylhet Division, Sunamganj is a district of unparalleled natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. As a gateway to the breathtaking "Land of Haors," we invite you to explore a region where the land and water are in perfect harmony, offering an unforgettable experience for every visitor.

Discover Our Geography and History

Sunamganj is a unique geographical marvel, covering an area of 3,669.58 square kilometers. Our district is defined by its extensive haors (wetlands), which are bordered by the scenic Khasia and Jaintia hills of India to the north. This diverse landscape is home to over 2.4 million people and is divided into 10 upazilas, 4 municipalities, and over 2,800 villages.

Our history is a source of great pride. Sunamganj played a vital role in the Nankar Rebellion of 1922-23 and was a key center for the anti-British movement. Our brave residents were also at the forefront of the 1971 Liberation War, with Sunamganj being liberated on December 6, 1971. The numerous memorials and historical sites across the district stand as a testament to our enduring spirit.

A Thriving Local Economy

The economy of Sunamganj is deeply connected to our natural resources. We are a major hub for the stone and sand business, supplying high-quality river sand, crushed stone, and gravel across the region. This sector supports over 50,000 workers directly.

Sunamganj is also known as the "Fishery Capital" of Bangladesh due to our numerous haors. Tanguar Haor is the largest inland billabong for aquaculture, and our local fishermen supply a significant portion of the nation's freshwater fish, preserving age-old traditions and a sustainable way of life.
